Game of Thrones Creators Sign Huge Development Deal With Netflix

The creators of Game of Thrones creators are leaving the premium cable world behind.

Per Deadline, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss have signed a huge, nine-figure overall deal with Netflix.

The duo will reportedly mean they will write, produce, and direct projects exclusively for the streamer, with the "water cooler series" similar to Game of Thrones being high on the list.

Benioff and Weiss were with Game of Thrones for all eight seasons. The series became HBO's biggest show, and despite backlash lobbed at the pair, the show went on to score a record 32 Emmy nominations for its final season.

While many fans thought the mixed reception to the final season of the epic fantasy series would cast a dark cloud over their careers, the subsequent Emmy nominations seemingly prove that even a sub-par Game of Thrones is better than some of the other stuff on TV.

Despite the backlash, Benioff and Weiss have yet to speak publicly about the mixed reception and decided to ditch the show's last-ever Comic-Con panel last month.

HBO is pressing full steam ahead with a prequel of Game of Thrones, and it's possible that other spinoffs could follow.

Weiss and Benioff were also working on an alt-history drama Confederate at HBO, but the project was put on the backburner when the concept was not well-received.
